This could take a while. Pic related, those are the actual exam cars they use these days.

Let me know what his time is like and how he fared compared to the other competitors.

It’s probably even more exciting here than in your board meeting! :P

Unfortunately, it’s not a fair CV ompetition because everyone gets a different route. :( The rallycross looking thing is just some basic exercises (driving and reversing in a lane and on a curve, hill starts, stuff like that) you start with to make sure you’re not an utter danger before you go on the exam proper (driving in the city).

That’s whack. I think it should be like the FIA license system. In order to get a real license, you need to score wins.

Do they provide the cars, or does everyone in Poland just drive silver Toyotas these days?

Exam cars are provided by the gov’t, but silver Toyotas are still big here. :P

Ha, basic. My driver’s test consisted of:

A small bit of road driving (except for one block, on quiet residential streets)

Parallel parking (in a space with no car behind it, so I could just pull straight in)

A K-turn

Just in case you were wondering why American drivers suck...

Heh, I had to drive my Suburban for the exam. The patrolman had to get out and spread the cones for the parallel parking portion further apart since I couldn’t fit in the standard exam spot.

My drivers test consisted of about 40 minutes of city driving during rush hour dodging cyclists and conquering roundabouts, parallel parking in a tight spot with traffic waiting for me and a hill start (in a manual obviously).

I did have close to 30 hours of practice with an instructor in real traffic in advance. I believe this to be average here.

They have 1.33 litre of pure power under their bonnets! The Micra I took my exam in was a 1.2. :(

What kind of exam is it? It’s a two part here in New Jersey, a written and like a 10 mintue drive on a closed course.

why are you JUST sitting there in the parking lot??? you could be calling him on the phone, or texting him. you could go and run interference in traffic............. JUST. sitting ...... there.

First there is a written part, but that’s taken separately from the main exam. The practical exam goes like this:

1. Car knowledge. You have to point out randomly selected elements of the car (various lights, oil filler, various rezervoirs, etc.). Then you adjust the seat and steering wheel to the correct position.

2. Basic exercises on a closed course. You demonstrate you can drive forward and backwards in a somewhat narrow lane and on a curve and that you can feel where the car ends by driving and reversing up to cones. Then you do a handbrake assisted hill start (exams are taken on manual cars)

3. City driving on a random route. You go out and drive around the city. There are some required elements like a 3 point turn, parking, u-turn, surprise emergency stop, roundabouts, etc. Otherwise this part is entirely random and usually lasts 40 to 60 minutes. If you touch a solid line or do anything remotely dangerous the exam ends immediatelly - you pull over and switch seats with the examiner.

In my city about 25-30% of people manage to pass on their first attempt.

Do you feel like you have a lot of bad drivers in your city? Taking a harder exam in my opinion would drastically cut down the number of poor drivers in my state

Why does your driving test involve plastic cones?

When I did mine you just headed out into the surrounding suburbs with the examiner.

Sounds exactly like the exam here. 30 hours of practice with an instructor are required to be allowed to take the exam.

I think the standard of driving in my city is pretty decent, people also mostly drive in a relaxed manner. If you see a shitty driver they usually don’t have local plates. I really like driving in my city.

I did my NY test on road, but some places do closed course. Here’s a Maryland MVA test course (I have no idea what’s up with the alien pavement markings):

Sounds like fun. In my day the driving part was only 15-20 minutes. They used to make a big thing about reversing around a bend. No emergency stops though.

The hatched diagonal lines are probably “no parking here”.

The rest of them are obviously a variant of the Nazca Lines .

Wow that’s a lot more difficult than how it is here in Canada (and probably the US). Sounds like a better system though.
